NEW LONDON , CT - 10/24/09 - The Boston College Sailing Team captured the 2009 ICSA Sloop National Championship in dramatic fashion yesterday, sailing at the US Coast Guard Academy. The Sloop Championships - college sailing's keelboat national title - was sailed in 26 foot Colgate, with a crew of four. The Eagles qualified for the championship by winning their Conference Championship in late September, also sailed at the Coast Guard Academy. Sailing for the Eagles was skipper Taylor Canfield '11 and crew Evan Cooke '10, Jonatha Taylor Lutz '13, Christian Manchester '10, and Chris Protasewich '10. BC finished second to St Mary's in the first two races on Friday - setting up a back and forth battle between these two teams that lasted through the entire ten race series. The pivotal race for the Eagles may well have been race number eight. The Eagles were tied for the lead with the Seahawks of St. Mary's and with five seconds before the start of the race, something was wrong on the Eagles' boat. Senior crew Christian Manchester was in the stern of the boat, behind skipper Taylor Canfield '11, attempting to make a repair. Apparently, the traveler was broken and with the breeze gusting to fourteen knots, it looked as though the Eagles' could be in trouble. Canfield managed to tack into a good lane after Manchester finished the repair - and the Eagles began to pull away from the fleet. With the breeze up, BC had a clear boat speed advantage and went on to win the race. After race eight, the crew described how they jury-rigged the traveler and also announced that they had "figured out how to sail the boat in breeze". They went on to win race nine and entered the final race with a four point lead. Off the start line in race ten, BC trailed St Mary's, but with their four point cushion, appeared to be in a good position to stay close. For the first time in the regatta, the Eagles' showed a sign of nerves, tacking away from the Seahawks and sailing to the opposite side of the course. Meanwhile, St. Mary's continued up the favored side of the beat, rounding the first mark in second place with BC rounding eighth! Realizing their mistake on the first beat, the Eagles settled down and began closing distance. On the layline to final windward mark, the Eagles managed tack in front of the seventh place boat to round in sixth, with St. Mary's still in second place - just close enough to take the Championship. Each team held their position on the final run, with the Eagles finishing just inches from fifth and capturing the 2009 ICSA Sloop National Championship. Sunday, October 18 2009 the seas were furious as an early season Nor'easter hit the area. Savin Hill Yacht Club endured significant damage. The chains for the main floats parted and the floats were in danger of drifting off station. About a half dozen members made emergency repairs securing the the floats with lines until they can be put away for the winter. Paul Rosell's boat broke from it's mooring and washed hard aground on the Morrissey Blvd shoreline. Monday the 19th, a crane came in to unstep the rig and lift the boat onto the club's Brownell rig.
